Description:

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
(1856-1915) Black American educator born a slave, established and headed Tuskegee Institute to provide practical training to blacks. Fine content T.L.S. on Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, 1p. 4to., Tuskegee, Dec. 31, 1900 to M. G. Brumbaugh, Commissioner of Education in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In part: "...I shall be glad to know what progress you are making in regard to securing a student for us. I should like him to be at least 14 years of age...encourage the one you select to know that we have already a Porto Rican student here and several Cuban students. The persons who are to pay his expenses are a little anxious that he come soon...". Very good. It is not well known that Washington educated students from Africa, South American, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica with the hope that these "colored" students would return to better their home countries.
