BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
(1856-1915) Black American educator born a slave, established and headed Tuskegee Institute to provide practical training to blacks. Handwritten and signed letter on Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, 1p. 8 1/2" x 11", Tuskegee, March 13, 1897, to Ella Kent. In full: "The barrel of clothing sent by yourself and sister to Tuskegee is most helpful, I assure you, we use all such gifts in a way to teach our students how to help themselves, the greatest lesson I learned from that great man, Gen. S.C. Armstrong was one of self help and it is the foundation of all our work at Tuskegee and is to be the foundation on which the race is to rise to independence..." Washington signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion. The letter is mounted and framed with a b/w photograph of Washington, and bears folds, with some minor soiling, else very good. Samuel Chapman Armstrong (1839-1893) was an American educator and a Union Army officer. After the war, he founded and was the first principal of the normal school which is now Hampton University. Perhaps the best student of Armstrong''s Hampton-style education was Booker T. Washington. After coming to the school in 1872, Washington immediately began to adopt Armstrong''s teaching and philosophy. In the end, he idolized Armstrong and considered him one of his greatest inspirations.
