BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
(1856-1915) Black American educator born a slave, established and headed Tuskegee Institute to provide practical training to blacks. T.L.S. on Tuskegee Institute letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Oct. 8, 1892 to Dr. M. A. Rogers, editor of Noted Negro Women, in part: "...Please do not think that I have forgotten the sketch of Mrs. Washington. I am at work on it...". Laminated for protection, trimmed at bottom, else very good. The recipient of the letter, Monroe Alpheus Majors (1864-1960) was a prominent black who lived in Texas, Los Angeles, and Chicago. In 1886, racists in Texas threatened Majors, and he relocated to Los Angeles where he became the first black physician to practice west of the Rockies.
