Description:

BOOK PRESENTED TO ADOLF HITLER, FROM THE REICHSCHANCELLERY
Excellent relic recovered from the Reichschancellery in Berlin, a specially-bound volume inscribed by one of the authors to Adolf Hitler and kept by Hitler in his library. The volume, "III. Bericht uber die Ausgrabungen in Olympia" (III Report of the Excavations in Olympia, Winter 1938/38), was authored by Emil Kunze and Hans Schleif, [n.p., n.d.], 154 pp. 8" x 10 1/2", with three fold-outs and 110 illustrations. The volume is beautifully bound in fine-grained red leather with gilt title on the spine and a gilt national eagle with swastika on the front cover. The front flyleaf bears a calligraphic inscription in German: "In Gratitude and Loyalty to the Fuhrer! In the name of the German Science" and is signed by an unknown individual, most likely author Emil Kunze. Cover very lightly scuffed at edges and one tiny spot on front cover, otherwise very fine condition. Our consignor's father was the chief of staff, American Headquarters, Berlin Air Command from June to August, 1945. During this period, he had the opportunity to "liberate" several volumes from the Reichschancellery, specifically Hitler's offices and those adjoining. This example is one of those volumes. With consignor's notarized letter of provenance.
