Description:

BOOK FROM I.G. FARBEN AT AUSCHWITZ
Scientific text in German, "Lehrbuch der Physik: Elektrische Eigenschaft der Metalle und Elektrolyte; magnetische Eigenschaften der Materie" ("Textbook of Physics: Electrical Property of Metals and Electrolytes; Magnetic Properties of Matter"), ed. Arnold Eucken (Braunschweig: Druck und Verlag von Freidr. Vieweg & Sohn Akt.-Ges.), 1934, 906pp. 8vo. The text is stamped on the front flyleaf, title page, forward and contents page: "I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Werk Auschwitz Wissenschaft Bibliothek", indicating that it was once held by the scientific library at the I.G. Farben "Buna-Werke" chemical plant in Oswiecim, Poland, the site of the Monowitz subcamp of the Auschwitz concentration camp system, also known as Auschwitz III. On the flyleaf and title pages, these stamps partially cover older, cancelled stamps reading "I.G. Farbenindustrie A.G., Werk Auschwitz Bucherei Buna". Cancelled property stamps from a Polish library in Oswiecim are also present on the limitation page and the final page of the index. The book shows a library catalog label on the spine, with some interior soliing and bumping to the covers, else very good. At its peak, Monowitz held approximately 11,000 prisoners, mostly Jews, who were used as slave labor at the "Buna Werke" plant. It would be evacuated in January of 1945, with its prisoners forced to march to the Gleiwitz subcamp near the Czech border. It is estimated that more than 10,000 prisoners died while serving as forced labor for I.G. Farben.
