Description:

(1898-1959) U.S. Army sergeant who became the main organizer and spokesperson of the Bonus Army, a group of World War I veterans who gathered in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1932 to demand early cash payments for their separation-of-service certificates. The marchers were forcibly evicted from their temporary settlement on the Anacostia river by infantry and tanks under the command of Douglas MacArthur, and their shelters burned. Rare signature "W. W. Walters" in black ink on a 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" index card, adding "Regimental Commander Veterans On To Wash. Bonus March". At the bottom of the same card appears a second signature in black ink, that of a J.M. Hosey, adding "Field Marsgal of Bonus March Orgon [sic] to Washington". While histories of the march indicate that an individual was elected to the position of "Field Marshal", they do not record his name, and no mention of Hosey can be located. Mounted with album corners to an album page, along with a period newspaper clipping depicting Waters with three other march organizers. Evenly toned, else very good.
