711. (BONNIE AND CLYDE GANG) FLOYD G. HAMILTON (d. 1986) American gangster, with his brother Raymond was a member and driver for the Barrow Gang. His most notorious involvement with the murderous gang was when in January, 1934 Bonnie, Clyde, Hamilton and Jimmy Mullens launched a successful raid on Eastham Prison Farm, rescuing Raymond Hamilton, Joe Palmer, Henry Methvin, and Hilton Bybee. Joe Palmer killed one guard and, apparently wounded another. The Hamilton Brothers were involved in other gang activities, Floyd being the luckier of the two as Raymond met his end in the electric chair. We offer a fine archive of documents concerning Floyd Hamilton's pardon after 21 years in prison at Alcatraz and Leavenworth, all of which originated from Hamilton himself. Included is: a D.S. 2pp. legal folio, Washington, Dec. 23, 1966, a Christmas pardon issued and signed in type by President LYNDON B. JOHNSON setting forth the crimes for which Hamilton was convicted, and granting him a "full and unconditional pardon", also signed by Attorney General RAMSEY CLARK; a Proclamation of the Governor of the State of Texas, 1p. legal folio, Austin, Apr. 4, 1967 giving a "full pardon and restoration of full civil rights of citizenship" to Hamilton, boldly signed by Gov. JOHN CONNALLY at bottom; with five typed pleas and about 12 pages of legal correspondence, all ca. mid-1950's, all concerning Hamilton's efforts to obtain release citing inappropriate sentencing, non-concurrent sentences, etc., and all of which appear to have been rebuffed by the courts. Some of the pleas bear a few notes in a somewhat shaky hand which we assume to be that of Hamilton, at the time a well-worn convict.
