HUMPHREY BOGART AND LAUREN BACALL (1899-1957) American film actor and star of the immensely popular films The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, and The African Queen, to name a few. Rare, partly-printed typed D.S. 2 pages, 4to, on imprinted Warner Bros. Pictures stationery, (Burbank, California), May17, 1950, a contractual letter, [retained, dark carbon copy] from Warner Bros. to Bogart in Los Angeles resubmitting an agreement covering his approval of "the screen play entitled "PROJECT 7 " by Martin Rackin in which: "we desired you to portray the role of 'Martin Ferguson'...upon condition that an accredited writer is engaged and...said screen play is hereby deemed approved by you as the basis of the next motion picture to be produced...by United States Pictures, Inc. ", adding "should the said United States Pictures, Inc. within its sole discretion, determine not to produce said motion picture, then and in that event said motion picture will be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures...You further hereby approve of Mr. Bretaigne Windust as the director...You further agree to commence your services for us under said agreement...no later than July 10, 1950, nor earlier than ten (10) days from and after...commencement date...as aforesaid...kindly indicate your approval and acceptance thereof with your signature in the space herein below provided ". Signed at conclusion by Bogart and by a studio official. Stapled at top left corner with a carbon copy of a letter from the Warner Bros. "Home Office Trust Dept." affirming the agreement between Bogart and the studio. The firm referred to here undoubtedly was released under the title The Enforcer, the only film on which New York stage director Bretaigne Windust and Bogart worked together in 1950-51. During 1950-51, Bogart appeared in one other film for Warner Bros., Chain Lightning. During this same period, he completed In a Lonely Place and Sirocco for Columbia Pictures. In 1952, his blockbuster hit made for United Artists, The African Queen was released. With an unrelated Warner Bros. D.S. by LAUREN BACALL signed "Betty Bogart " 1p., 4to, Burbank, California, January 31, 1949, on power of attorney matters. Lauren "Betty" Bacall, now Mrs. Humphrey Bogart, had made her screen debut with her husband Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not, and had recently completed Key Largo with him.
