Description:

BOB HALDEMAN
(1926-1993) Chief of Staff to President Richard Nixon credited with implementing significant changes to the staffing structure of the White House that is used to this day. Played a significant role in the infamous Watergate scandal that result in his indictment on the charges of perjury, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Superb content T.L.S. a few months after his resignation, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], September 20, 1973, to a supporter named Darrell Johnson. In part: '...Your most thoughtful note was deeply appreciated. As I said at the hearings, I fully expect the truth to be known eventually-- and when it is, it will be abundantly clear that neither our great President nor I had any involvement in or knowledge of wrongdoing. In the meantime, it is most heartwarming know of your support...' Accompanied by a postal envelope. Very fine. Despite his claims in this letter, Haldeman was one of the key figures in the scandal from the start. Most famously, he was featured in the 'Smoking Gun' tape, a recording from Nixon's oval office that showed the President instructing Haldeman to have the CIA pressure the FBI into dropping the Watergate Investigation. Nixon said that the investigation would 'open up the whole Bay of Pigs thing again.' While the President reportedly told Haldeman that he 'loved him like a brother' he would not issue a pardon for him, and he would later bme indicted and served 18 months in prison. After his release in 1978, Haldeman helped write a book called 'The Ends of Power' in when he claims that President Nixon had initiated the break in of the Watergate Hotel, and participated in the cover up from the start.
