Description:

BLACK SPANISH AMERICAN WAR SOLDIER'S FRATERNAL IMAGE Unusual cabinet photograph, 6 1/2" x 4 1/2", an outdoor image taken of three members of the all-black 9th Ohio Volunteers during the Spanish-American War, but the poses effected by the four men in the image seem to have symbolic meaning similar to that found in secret societies. The central officer in the image, Captain W. S. Thomas, almost absent-mindedly holds a hand drill in one hand while looking away from the camera. Meanwhile, the soldier on his right, identified as an officer from other images, also looks away from the camera, holding a partly unrolled scroll in one hand and a smoking pipe in the other. To the captain's left another soldier holds a hatchet, while crouched on the ground in front of Captain Thomas is a young orderly staring intently at the camera while holding an open pocket watch in one hand. Very good to fine.
