Description:

BLACK SOLDIER SUFFERS SEIZURE WHILE LEARNING TO READ
A good war-date Southern missionary school teacher's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Annie Merriam of Worcester, Mass. who went South to teach black students, Washington, N. C., Jan. 22, 1864. In part: "…yesterday we had quite a scene in our school. We have five or six colored soldiers in school, & just as we were finishing out afternoon exercises one of them was taken with a fit. The first I knew he was looking at me with one of the most horrified expressions I ever saw…he made one of the most unearthly screams I ever heard. I was so frightened, thinking he had been taken crazy, that I rushed for the door without any ceremony and out of doors…round the house in a jiffy. The children rushed too & those that could not get out of the door, went piling out the windows, in a perfect panic. All the time the poor man, whom I expected to see come rushing round the corner every moment, had fainted…& was lying on the floor. Miss Groves was not quite so…excited as I was, & kept her place by the pulpit. The doctor & some water were sent for…the latter soon revived the fainting man…& in a few moments he was able to walk home. This ended our school for the day…our school room…is most beautifully decorated...over one side are the words 'God bless Abraham Lincoln'…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
