Description:

BLACK REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER WINS HIS FREEDOM!
Superb content partly-printed D.S., 1p. small 4to., Hartford, Dec. 27, 1784, in which the Pay-Table Committee agrees to pay to "Juba Freeman" the sum of 22 pounds, nine shillings and nine pence as his pay retroactive to Jan. 1, 1781 for his service in the Continental Army. Incredibly, we located Freeman's military history in the Mark E. Mitchell Collection of African-American History. Freeman enlisted as "Juba Negro" in Milford, Ct. on June 2, 1777 agreeing "with the consent of my master" to serve in a regiment under Col. Douglas and to have half his wages paid to his master, Richard Law, with the other half going to Juba. Mitchell notes that Juba changed his name to "Freeman" during his service, and in our document is paid the balance of wages due him for his service. Surprisingly, his ex-master Richard Law signs as well! Light toning, else very good.
