Description:

BLACK MAN IS ENLISTED AS AN OFFICER
Rare 1/4 plate tintype photograph showing a black man standing full-length, one white-gloved hand leaning upon a chair, the other proudly displaying his kepi with badge, sporting an officer's sash tied about his waist. Fine condition, hand-tinted sash and badge, in an oval frame and black case. During the Civil War, more than 125,000 men served as commissioned officers in the volunteer army of the United States. One hundred and eleven of these men were black, ninety of whom served in combat units. Of these combat officers, almost all served in the Louisiana Native Guards. This man may be one of those officers, though more likely this is a post-war image.
