BLACK ARKANSAS COLLEGE BUILDING CAMPAIGN POSTER
Interesting ca. 1947 poster, 19 x 22.75 in., advertising a ‘Campaign for Building Fund' to expand the Walters-Southland Institute in Lexa, Arkansas. The campaign seeks to raise $25,000 to construct a sixteen-room girls' dormitory, with a boys' dormitory and workshop listed as the second phase. The poster is illustrated with photos showing the junior and senior classes of 1947, as well a science class, members of the domestic science department, a dairy maid, and the administration building, temporary girls' dormitory and barn. It further bears the plea: ‘We Are Making Urgent Appeal to all Friends and Supporters of Religious, Agricultural and Industrial Education for the Youth of the Negro Race.' The name of the school's superintendent, Bishop W. W. Matthews, is listed at the bottom, along with the address of the printer ‘D. M. Wells & Son, 521 State St., Little Rock, Ark.' Shows folds with small holes at the junctures, otherwise in very good condition. The school was founded as the Helena Orphan Asylum by Quaker educators in 1864. In 1866 it relocated to Lexa, and became Southland College in 1876. By the time it was sold in 1925, it had graduated hundreds of Black teachers. It was purchased and operated by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church as the Walters-Southland Institute through the 1930's, with the 1947 date appearing on the poster presented here being the latest mention we can find of the institution.
