Description:

BLACK 24TH INFANTRY REGIMENT SERGEANT'S SPANISH CAMPAIGN MEDAL AND PHILIPPINE CAMPAIGN RIBBON BAR
A very fine set of two decorations, the first a U.S. Army Spanish Campaign Medal, awarded to soldiers who took part in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The obverse of the medal depicts a fortification bordered by laurel and olive branches with the inscription ‘War With Spain 1898'. The reverse depicts an eagle perched on a stand of arms and colors, beneath ‘United States Army' and above ‘For Service' and a partial border of thirteen stars. The medal is fitted with a suspension ribbon of blue and yellow, the colors of which have bled and faded over the years, with a sewn-in pinback clasp. The edge of the medal is marked ‘No. 3108', allowing the awardee to be identified as Sgt. Monroe Camp of Company K of the 24th Infantry Division, a segregated Black unit and one of the original ‘Buffalo Soldier' regiments. This regiment distinguished itself at the Battle of San Juan Hill by assaulting and capturing a crucial Spanish blockhouse and trench network at the crest of the hill. The medal shows a few small scratches, but is otherwise in very good overall condition. It is accompanied by a ribbon bar for the Philippine Campaign Medal, which Sgt. Camp was also awarded (No. 9234), although the medal itself is absent. Two pieces. Ex. Wilfred Baumann collection.
