Description:

BLACK 10TH CAVALRY SOLDIER'S PHILIPPINE CAMPAIGN MEDAL
A fine, identified example of a U.S. Army Philippine Campaign Medal, awarded who took part in the Philippine Insurrection between 1899 and 1913. The obverse of the medal depicts a palm tree flanked by an oil lamp and scale, bordered by the inscription ‘Philippine Insurrection 1899'. The reverse depicts an eagle perched on a stand of arms and colors, beneath ‘United States Army' and above ‘For Service' and a partial border of thirteen stars. The medal has been fitted with an old replacement suspension ribbon and its original pinback clasp, fitted upside-down. The edge if the medal is marked ‘No. 8995', allowing the awardee to be identified as Pvt. Joseph S. Allen of Troop E of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, a segregated Black unit and one of the original ‘Buffalo Soldier' regiments. The medal shows very light patina, otherwise in fine condition overall. Ex. Albert Gleim and Wilfred Baumann collections.
