Description:

BIRTHDAY CARTOONS FOR HUMORIST CHARLES BERTRAND LEWIS
Excellent group of five original illustrations, each executed by a different early 20th-century cartoonist on the occasion of the 70th birthday of journalist and humorist CHARLES BERTRAND LEWIS (1842-1924), who wrote under the pseudonym M. Quad. Includes: Original illustration in ink and watercolor, 5" x 11" (sight), by ED CAREY (1871-1928), with a sixteen-stanza satirical poem about Lewis by "poet" Samuel Bowser, a character created by Lewis. Carey''s illustration appears to depict Bowser writing the poem, with seven additional caricatures at the edges, and the artist signs at the bottom of the image. Some toning visible at the edges, else very good. WITH: Original illustration in ink and watercolor, 7 3/4" x 5" (sight), by JOHN R. BRAY (1879-1978). The illustration depicts a caricature of Lewis, prodding an anthropomorphized globe with his fountain pen, as Father Time looks on in amazement. Bray signs at bottom left, adding the date "2-15-12". He also adds an inscription at top in black ink: "My heartiest congratulations to one who has out so much joy and sunshine into life''s struggle", continuing at bottom: "Yours with highest esteem", where he also signs "J.R. Bray" in black ink. Some soiling visible at the top and right edges, with a diagonal 4" tear from upper left, else very good. WITH: Original illustration in ink, 8" x 8 3/4" (sight), by IKE MORGAN (1871-1913). The illustration depicts a caricature of Lewis reading from a book entitled "Quad''s Odds", as a listener laughs uproariously. Morgan signs at the bottom of the image, adding the inscription: "To my unmet boyhood friend M. Quad, including- "Mr. Bowser", Lime Kiln Club", "Arizona Slicker" and ''Quad''s Odds", after which he again signs in black ink. Soiling around the outer edges, likely from an old mounting, else very good. WITH: Original ink and watercolor illustration, 6" x 7" (sight), by CARL E. SCHULTZE (1866-1939), best known for his comic strip "Foxy Grandpa", drawn under the pseudonym "Bunny". Schultze executes the illustration on a sheet of letterhead bearing his initials, depicting his "Grandpa" and "bunny" characters bowing their heads in respect before a pair of enormous shoes legs, presumably belonging to Lewis. He adds the inscription: "To Mr. C. B. Lewis the seventy year old youngster. Foxy Grandpa pays homage when years have but added youth" and signs "Carl E. Schultze with hearty congratulations, February 15, 1912". He also signs with his pseudonym "Bunny", next to his illustration. Very good. WITH: Original ink illustration, 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" (sight), by WALT MCDOUGALL (1858-1938) often referred to as the first syndicated newspaper cartoonist for his illustrations accompanying the columns of humorist Bill Nye. McDougall depicts Lewis as a writer during "The Stone Age", "The Middle Ages", "The Fountain Pen Age", and "The Typewriter Age", with the appropriate clothing and writing instruments for each period. At bottom, McDougall signs in black ink, adding the inscription: "With the love, awe and admiration of a mere boy!" Soiling around the outer edges, likely from an old mounting, with three small surface tears, else very good. Five pieces.
