BIRNEY'S ZOUAVES RECRUITING POSTER
Rare and most desirable recruiting poster for the 23rd Pennsylvania Vols., otherwise known as "Birney's Zouaves", 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" sight, bearing an eagle standing atop a shield with arrows in its talons and holding a banner in its beak reading: "TO THE RESCUE.". The text of the poster reads: "ATTENTION RECRUITS WANTED FOR CO. G, 23d REGT. P.V., Col. THOMAS H. NEILL, NOW IN SERVICE AT HARRISON'S LANDING. BOUNTY PAID ON BEING MUSTERED Apply to Capt. John Maxwell, S.W. Cor. Ninth & Walnut Streets, Second Story". A light pencil note at bottom reads: "1863". Near fine condition, double-matted and set into an antiqued frame. "Birney's Zouaves" were organized in Philadelphia on Aug. 1, 1861 under the command of future Gen. David Bell Birney. The regiment would see some of the fiercest action of the war, being heavily engaged at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, in the Mine Run campaign, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and before Petersburg. The regiment lost during service five officers and 110 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and three officers and 70 enlisted men by disease.
