Description:

BILLY BOWLEGS (HOLATA MICCO)
(c. 1810-1864) Leader of the Seminoles in Florida during the Second and Third Seminole Wars. He eventually removed to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma where he served as a captain in the Union Army in the 1st Indian Regiment, an irregular unit that operated in Arkansas and Kansas against Confederate Indians and guerillas. War-date manuscript L.S. with his mark "x", 1p. legal folio, Camp Cox's Creek, Sept. 27, 1862 to Gen. James G. Blunt commanding the Department of Kansas recommending "...Lieut Elias M. Wright for any vacancy that may occur from the resignation of any of our Field Officers. And we would at the same time, ask of you, and through you of the President Our Great Father, the promotion of Lieut. Col. Wattles to Colonelcy of our Regiment should Colonel Furnas resign - We prefer an officer with whom we are acquainted and who understands our wants...". A few moderately toned spots, usual folds, else very good. Offered together with a war date manuscript document, 1p. oblong 8vo., "Hd. Qrs 1st Ind. Reg." Sept. 13, 1862 in the name of none other than Lt. Col. Wattles ordering that "This command will move in the direction of Coxes Creek at Day light on the Morning of Sept. 15, 1862. Care will be taken that nothing valuable be left in camp...". Wattles was eventually promoted to colonel in November 1863. Though he was apparently respected by his Indian soldiers, he was arrested in March 1865 and charged with failing to pay Indian interpreters, selling contraband stock (mostly horses) and retaining money for his own use and drawing funds for non-existent solders. The charges, leveled by his staff officer, were dropped in May 1865. Usual folds, else fine. Together, two pieces.
