THOMAS F. FARRELL (1891 - 1967) Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Field Operations of the Manhattan Project, acting as executive officer to Major General Leslie R. Groves, Jr. Outstanding A.L.S. on illustrated "Atomic Bomb Tests" letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Bikini, July 5, 1946 to Charles Sells, State Supt. of Public Works in Albany. Four days after the the first post-war "Able" test of the atomic bomb at Bikini, Gen. Leslie Groves' deputy writes, in part: "...The first test is over and the preliminary results are in. While the bomb exploded a considerable distance from the target...the results were in general quite satisfactory...The more we dig into the results, the more impressive are the findings. It is still a terribly powerful weapon. It sunk five widely spaced ships and damaged many others...the next bomb would do more damage...visual results would be more spectacular...The photographs came out fine..." With signed transmittal envelope mailed from his vessel, USS HAVEN. SOLD WITH: a 4.5 x 3.5 in. photo of the Japanese heavy cruiser SAKAWA, sunk as a test ship during the "Able" test. Three pieces.
