BERNARDO O`HIGGINS
(1778 - 1842) Chilean soldier and statesman, known as "The Liberator of Chile" after decisively defeating the Spanish at Chacabuco. Partly-printed D.S. on "El Director Supremo de la Republico de Chile" letterhead, 1p. sm. folio, 1820, confirmation of the appointment of Vincente Balbastro to the rank of Captain of a company in the 3rd Squadron of the Regiment of Cavalry of the Armed Forces of the Indies, entitling him to "...all privileges according to his title...". With stamp and original paper seal, but some paper loss at left margin causing loss to a few words of text. O'Higgins' signature is fine and bold.
