BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. MONTGOMERY CONGRATULATES THE ALLIED ARMIES FOLLOWING D-DAY. Fine historic content D.S. 'B. L. Montgomery', 1p. 4to., 'France', June 10, 1944. Four days after the D-Day landing, Montgomery congratulates all Allied forces in France, which were under his ultimate command. In part: '...21 ARMY GROUP Personal Message from C-in-C...After four days of fighting the Allied Armies have secured a good and firm lodgment on the mainland of France...we must thank Almighty God for the success we have achieved...we must pay a tribute to the Allied Navies and Air Forces...I want to personally congratulate every officer and man in the Allied Armies on the splendid result...British, Canadian, and American soldiers, fighting gallantly, side by side, have achieved a great success...Much yet remains to be done...Good luck to you all...'. Signed at the bottom as Commanding General of 21 Army Group. Text faded but entirely legible, else very good. The battle for Caen still lay ahead, and it would take a heavy toll on the British and Canadians.
