BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY (1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Good content war-date T.L.S. with holograph salutation and subscription, 1p. legal folio, "TAC Headquarters", June 9, 1945. In part: "...I have had since D day on my personal staff...three American officers, who have acted as Liaison Officers...They have performed services which I have valued very highly, and each officer has...been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Monty states that he does not want to "stand in the way" of any of the three listed officers being able to go home, but does ask that one who had not been overseas as long as the others remain on his staff for a short while longer. Ragged top and bottom margins not affecting text, some pencil notes, else boldly signed and still very good. WALTER BEDELL "BEETLE" SMITH (1895-1961), American military officer who served as Eisenhower's chief of staff at Allied Forces Headquarters during the Tunisia Campaign and the invasion of Italy, and was chief of staff at SHAEF in the campaign in Western Europe from 1944-45.
