(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. A.L.S. ‘Montgomery of Alamein', 2pp. 8vo., Alton, United Kingdom, April 12, 1949, to Colonel Sir GEORGE MALLABY (1902-1978) British colonel, recipient of U.S. Legion of Merit and knighted in 1958. regarding the commanders-in-chief committee. In part: ‘...I enclose a paper giving 4 principles which I imagine would be agreed by all...If W.U.C.O.S. will issue orders to us laying down these 4 points, then I think we could make it work: so long as the 4 principles are loyally observed by all members of the C's-in-C Organization...' Included with this lot is a manuscript D.S. (unsigned), 2pp. large 4to., [n.p., n.d.], the aforementioned four principles. It states that no C's-in-C committee will have no national banks or appointment, the chairman and members owe allegiance to W.U.C.O.S., no appeals are to be made directly to national Chiefs of Staff or their national Defense Minister but rather through W.U.C.O.S., and a National Forces Commander may appeal to his own National Chief of Staff...' Minor rust stains on all three pages from the staple, else fine.
