Rare relic from General Dwight D. Eisenhower's tenure as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force and Military Commander of a defeated Germany, a street poster detailing the establishment of Military Government Courts. The poster, "Ordinance No. 2", measures 31" x 35" and contains nine articles printed first in English and then in German. The nine articles in Ordinance No. 2 establish, for the first time, United States law and the basis for military governance in occupied areas. ARTICLE I and ARTICLE II state that this law is separate from tribunals for war criminals, and deals specifically with the occupied population, with the exception of allied personnel. According to ARTICLE III, these Military Courts have the legal power to impose the death sentence on German citizens, or any lesser penalty. In ARTICLE VII:CONFIRMATION OF DEATH SENTENCES, Eisenhower reserves the right to make all final decisions on death sentences. A superb legal and historical relic that likely hung on a wall in Germany immediately after the war, this document conveys the unchartered territory the United States government found itself in as European occupiers. Moderately toned, with archivally repaired separations.
