Description:

BENJAMIN VAUGHAN
(1751-1835) British political radical, diplomatic messenger between Benjamin Franklin and Lord Shelburne who enabled negotiations which brought about the 1783 Treaty of Paris and the end of the Revolutionary War. Interesting association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., London, March 29, 1785, to a French banker. In part: "...I have taken the liberty to draw upon you at sight for twenty Louis d'ors payable nett money in Paris, in favor of 'Le Comte de Mirabeau, fils' or order, which I doubt not you will do me the favor to honor, reimbursing yourself by your bill or draft upon me, including your charges..." Vaughan signs at the conclusion in black ink. The document shows folds with slight toning to the edges, else very good. HONORE GABRIEL RIQUETI, COMTE DE MIRABEAU (1749-1791) was a moderate leader of the nascent French Revolution, an advocate for reconciliation between the revolutionaries and the royalty, and an advocate of a constitutional monarchy built on the model of Great Britain. While hailed as a national hero upon his death, he was later derided and vilified when it was revealed that his debts had been paid and that he had received a stipend from King Louis XVI.
