(BENJAMIN RUSH)
(1745 - 1813) Pioneering American physician, Surgeon General of the Continental Army, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Later founded Dickinson College. A true copy of a good association letter written by Rush on October 6, 1801, to an unknown 'Lord.' It reads in part: '...Permit me to introduce to your Lordship Dr. Nathaniel Chapman, a former pupil of mine...He is a native of Virginia and has been from his childhood a near neighbor of the late general Washington. His talents have commanded the respect of all his teacher and his manners have acquired him as many friends as he has acquaintances...' At the conclusion is the attestation 'a true copy from the original in my possession, Robert Anderson M.D.' Moderately toned and stained, else fine. Nathaniel Chapman (1780-1853) was an American physician, a founder of the American Medical Association, and served as President of the Philadelphia Medical Society and American Philosophical Society
