BENJAMIN RUSH AND ANTI-IMPEACHMENT EUROPEANS
(1811 - 1877) Secretary of legation at London, where he served for a time as charge d''affaires, son of Attorney General Richard Rush and grandson of Signer Benjamin Rush. Pair of fine content A.L.S.''s written during the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, 8p. total, 8vo., Paris, Mar. 20 and Apr. 2, 1868 to Pennsylvania Rep. Adam J. Glossbrenner. In small part: "…my sphere of action at this great crisis is limited…the great torrent of popular indignation…is fast gathering, and will speedily overwhelm the Robespierres and Marats and Dantons…who are domineering it with such high hands and ''bloody instructions''…As soon as I read the ''Democratic Protest'' og the 45 members of the House I was delighted with it. But how to get it before the eye of Europe and the world!…" He describes presenting the protest to the editor of the Paris Messenger who hesitatingly printed the piece. He continues: "…the whole thing will end in a gigantic failure…the President will come triumphantly out of this ordeal…" He also notes that he has sent copies of the newspaper and an article he had inserted in a London newspaper (not included). Fine.
