Description:

(1796-1878) American frontiersman and military officer, extensively explored Oregon and the Yosemite area while seeking furs, later fought in the Second Seminole War. Inspiration for a story written by Washington Irving. Great association and scarce A.L.S. featuring his intricate calligraphy, 1p. 4to., Fort Smith [AR], December 28, 1876, to 'Genl. Wilson' very likely James G. Wilson (1832-1914), regarding a soldier he knew. In part: '...Capt. Martin Scott was an officer of the U.S. Army. He was abstracted of as a marksman, of whom the Coon Story is told. A modest, clever gentleman. He was killed at my side in the attack on Molina del Rey...' Partly inlaid to a larger sheet, few scattered stains else fine. Martin Scott (1788-1847) was a household name in the U.S. Army leading up to and during the Mexican War for his marksman skills, as he was generally regarded as the best in the service. He served with the 'Green Mountain Boys' of Vermont during the War of 1812 but spent most of his career at frontier posts in the Northwest. The famous 'Coon Story' mentioned tells of a racoon who reportedly gave himself up rather than be hunted when he saw Scott was pursuing him. He would be killed in action, as mentioned, at the assault on Molina Del Rey on September 8, 1847.
