Genl' 1p. 4to., ‘Hd Qrs of the Forces', Norfolk, Feb. 10, 1861, to brigadier general JOSEPH R. ANDERSON in Richmond. In part: ‘…I send enclosed a note [not present] I have just received from Gen. Walter Gwynn. As Gen. G. requests, I write to you today, that the arrangements of troops, and the position of Batteries as designed by Gen. Anderson (1813-1892) was owner of the Tredegar Iron Works prior to the outbreak of war, which became a major source of munitions and ordnance for the CSA. He suffered a head wound during the Seven Day's Battles and resigned his commission in 1862 to resume control of the ironworks. Confederate engineer and brigadier general Walter Gwynn (1802-1881) served as major general of the Virginia Volunteers until May 1861, when he ceded his position to Huger. He then oversaw the construction of fortifications at Sewall's Point and participated in the Battle of Big Bethel. Very good condition.
