Description:

BENJAMIN HARRISON
(1833 - 1901) 23rd President of the United States. Fine content manuscript L.S. as President on Executive Mansion letterhead, 4pp. 4to., Washington, Oct. 15, 1890 to Cornelius N. Bliss (1833– 1911), an American merchant and politician who would serve as Secretary of the Interior under McKinley and as Treasurer of the Republican National Convention in four successive campaigns. Following weeks of travel promoting Republican candidates for the midterm Congressional elections, Harrison first fawningly discusses an unfulfilled patronage position (a practice he abhorred), before describing his hopes for the elections. In part: '...I regret to say that the appointment at Ranagarva [?] was made some time ago. Mr. Garvey [?], of the State of Washington, was appointed and confirmed...that State had come so recently into the Union that it was neglected in the earlier appointments, and a very strong plea was made that the inequality should be righted...your personal interest in Mr. Reed will give him a high standing with me, if something acceptable can be found which I can send in the direction of New York Senator Hiscock...I find myself on my return from a three thousand mile journey which was punctuated by very frequent speeches, not so tired as I expected...I found our people in the west very hopeful and full of spirit. My reception by citizens of all parties was everything I could have desired in the way of cordiality and respect...' Heavy mounting remnants to the last blank page, folds, else very good. Regardless of Harrison's expectations, the Republicans suffered major losses due to the Panic of 1890 and the unpopularity of the McKinley Tariff. The party lost 86 seats to the Democrats in the House, giving the Democrats control, and two seats in the Senate.
