Description:

BENJAMIN HARRISON
(1833 - 1901) 23rd President of the United States, between the non-consecutive terms of Grover Cleveland, and grandson of William Henry Harrison. Manuscript L.S., 1p. 8vo., Indianapolis, Nov. 7, 1895, to Maturin L. Delafield, Jr. In part: ‘…I beg to acknowledge the compliment of an invitation from the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States, to attend a banquet on the evening of November 18th. I have already an engagement for that evening if I am able to be in New York at all, and therefore am compelled to decline the invitation you extend to me…' The Military Order of Foreign Wars was founded in 1894 as a fraternal organization for officer veterans of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican-American War, and their descendants. Veterans of the Civil War and the Indian Wars were not considered because they had not served in conflicts against ‘foreign powers'. The organization continues to operate, and has counted several American presidents and other notable military figures among its members. Mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise near fine.
