Description:

Scarce five pound note printed by Benjamin Franklin and partner David Hall in Philadelphia, 1759. The 2 3/4" x 3 1/4" note is printed in two colors, and is hand-numbered: "516" and signed by two unidentified men. The wear is average on this note. It is nicely framed in glass with both sides visible, with a CDV photo of Franklin and brass plaque, all surrounded by gilt wood trim and red moire cloth, the entirety set into an ornate gilt woof frame. This five-pound note (equal to 100 shillings) bears the date April 25, 1759. One hundred thousand pounds in legal tender bills were issued on April 25, 1759, to be valid until March 1, 1767. This was later extended until October 15, 1769. The Penn family's coat of arms appears on the front of the bill and a nature print is on the back. Interestingly, the spelling of "Pennsylvania" differs on most of the denominations of the notes, and it is thought that Franklin purposely did this to deter counterfeiting.
