Description:

Very rare, engraved example of Pennsylvania colonial currency printed by Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), American statesman, inventor, and author, Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The note for fifteen shillings is 3 x 3.5 in., printed in Philadelphia, and bears the date April 25, 1759. The Penn family's coat of arms appears on the front of the bill, and an image of skeletonized leaves on the verso along with the words 'Printed by B. Franklin and D. Hall 1759.' This is one of one hundred thousand pounds in legal tender bills that were authorized by the crown to be printed on April 25, 1759 and be valid until March 1, 1767, although it was later extended until October 15, 1769. Interestingly, the spelling of 'Pennsylvania' differs on most of the denominations of the notes, and it is thought that Franklin purposely did this to deter counterfeiting. Moderately worn, but text and symbols are still legible.
