Description:

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ENGRAVINGS
Fine pair of rare engravings of Benjamin Franklin. Includes a ca. 1780 Robert Pollard copperplate engraved bust profile of Franklin with military allegorical scene below, the caption reading: B. Franklin L.L.D. F.R.S.". . Some light toning and offsetting in margins, else very good. This 5" x 8 1/4" illustration was used in a hostile account of Franklin published in "Political Magazine", Vol. 1 (1780). Franklin apparently liked the bust, as he would later use it as the frontispiece in his book "Political, Miscellaneous and Philosophical Pieces". The second image is a ca. 1818 copperplate stipple engraving by Charles Goodman and Robert Piggot: "Dr. Franklin", 8" x 103/4", bearing a few tiny toned spots and light toning overall. Two pieces.
