Description:

BENJAMIN F. BUTLER ARCHIVE OF SPEECHES
(1818-1893) Union major general, called "The Beast" for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. Later in the war, he commanded the Army of the James. From 1883 to 1884, Butler was Governor of Massachusetts and in 1884 unsuccessfully ran for the presidency. Important group of three speeches, typed and printed, two of which were used by Butler as he gave the actual address. The grouping, believed to be from the files of his personal secretary, include: a printed speech, 70pp. 4to., "ADDRESS. Gentlemen of the Senate and of the House of Representatives...", [Boston, Jan. 4, 1883], tied in red cloth, within an envelope marked: "No. 1...read by Gov. Butler at his Inauguration as Governor of Ma. 1883", concluding section may not be present, some paragraphs marked in blue indelible pencil, likely by Butler; printed typed speech, approx. 60pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], annotated at top in the same hand in pencil: "M.S. used by Gen. Butler in his address at Tremont Templein the Presidential Campaign of 1888", tied with yellow ribbon at top; and a mounted printed speech: "Address of Benj. F. Butler at the request of the Board of Trade...", New York, Oct. 14, 1875, corrected throughout in what appears to be Butler's hand. Some soiling and marginal wear, overall very good. As suited his personality, Butler was a fiery orator, yet quite liberal, even advocating votes for women.
