Description:

Rare A.L.S. 'Benito Juarez', 1p. 4to., Dec. 22, 1855 in Spanish to Manuel Payno, the Minister of Finance, regarding funds necessary to re-establish order in Oaxaca. Juarez had returned to Mexico earlier in the year and was serving as Chief Justice under the administration of Ignacio Comonfort wherein he authored 'Juarez's Laws', a set of reforms to curtail the power of the Catholic Church and the military, in hopes of establishing a modern civil society and capitalist economy based on the U.S. model. At the time of writing, Juarez had just been appointed Governor of Oaxaca, and here he requests the financing he will need to govern in Oaxaca. He directs Payno to send the funds to Mariano Galvez, who has agreed to assist Juarez in his efforts. Small chip at top left corner, folds, else very good to fine. Juarez would take office as governor of Oaxaca on January 10, 1856.
