Description:

Great collection of 21 b/w prints, titled 'DE DR R. TOLLENAERE MARSCH', celebrating the exploits of Vlaams Nationaal Verbond (VNV), an extremist Flemish organization which cooperated with the German government and even actively recruited Belgian citizens to join the SS. Most images show the group's enormous and organized marches through Brussels, yet two notable images relate to the death of Flemish SS-Untersturmfuhrer, Reimond Tollenaere (1909-1942), including his portrait and his make-shift grave marker. Tollenaere was appointed as propaganda leader of the VNV and, in 1936, became a VNV member of parliament. In 1941, after the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion in the Soviet Union, Tollenaere was active in encouraging the recruitment of Flemish volunteers for the Eastern Front and eventually joined himself. He was killed by friendly fire from the Spanish Blue Division in January 1942 near Leningrad. The lot also two re-prints of handwritten messages from Belgian collaborationists Staf De Clercq and Joris Van Steenland, untranslated, and the original presentation folder. The folder bears notable staining and tears from age and use, though the prints are in very good to fine condition.
