660. LUDWIG BECK (1880 - 1945) Chief of the General Staff of the German Army, resigned in 1938 in protest of Hitler's decision to take Czechoslovakia. Beck joined the resistance, was implicated in the July, 1944 bomb plot, and was executed in his office after two suicide attempts. Rare A.L.S., 1p. large 4to., Lichterfelde, July 9, 1939 to "Friedrich". Beck thanks his friend for sending his book "Tradition and the New World", promising to read it when he has the opportunity. He adds: "...In your affair you begged me for my personal judgment. Please do understand if, beside my own incompetence, I have to stick to my old decision and am unable to follow your wishes.
