Description:

A hand-carved Bavarian wooden mask, 9.5 x 14 x 6 in., used for the Catholic Carnival also known as Karneval, Fasching, Fasnacht, Fosnat, or Fasnet, celebrated during the season of Lent. This vintage mask, like many others, depicts a man with accentuated features such as a large nose and deformed mouth to represent his peasant nature. The carnival was already a huge part of European culture in German speaking countries by the year 1234, as it still is to this day. These wooden masks are quite heavy and are meant to hide the identity of the wearer from evil spirits, as one celebrates the end of winter through various parades, balls, and plays, as well as other forms of excessive behavior not normally seen during the rest of the year. Although the precise age of this mask is unknown, the cracks and chipping, and petrified nature of the wood show it to be quite old, and extremely well-used. These masks tend to be handed down through a family line. There are many signs of wear and use, which only add to the intended ugliness and rough look of the piece.
