L. FRANK BAUM (1856-1919) American journalist, playwright and author of Wonderful Wizard of Oz [1900] and other humorous and extravagant tales in the series of books dealing with the mythical country of "Oz." Wonderful Wizard of Oz was turned into a highly successful musical comedy under the title Wizard of Oz [1901], and later provided the scenario for three motion pictures of the same name; two silent versions in 1910 and 1924, and the eternally beloved 1939 color extravaganza starring Judy Garland. Very scarce manuscript L.S. "L. Frank Baum," one sheet but 2pp. 4to. signed on verso of page, on illustrated letterhead depicting the covers of 14 of his books (many being Oz stories), and imprinted with his name and Hollywood address, January 1919. Writing to "Dear Ruth," he reports: "I have written twelve Oz books – as well as many other stories – and I write one each year – This years book will be called The Magic of Oz and will be ready next fall – One cannot be very lonely if they have books for friends – reading passes so much time away. Thank you for your suggestions for another book – I hope your book will be a great success. I know you are enjoying writing it ". Signed by Baum on back page. Some fold wear and light soiling, otherwise in very good condition. Letters of the author of The Wizard of Oz are rarely encountered.  $2,500-3,500
