Description:

BATTLE-USED AMERICAN MAPS OF THE GERMAN LINES AT THE SOMME
Fine lot of two American-issued topographical maps apparently used in the field by American officers in France during hostilities against the Germans. The first map, 32" x 22 1/4", was used by "Capt. Rainesford, M Co. C.O., 307 Infantry" which he appears to have written himself at lower-left. The map shows where the regiment departed from their train from the Pas de Calais, their route from the station, and the location of their bivouace on a steep, wooded hillside near Pas. Rainesford notes at bottom: "307th Inf. arrived at Mondicourt on the morning of May - 1918...detrained, served bread & coffee to men and hiked to Pas...Encamped...in woods...occasional shelling, nightly air raids, problems in trench work...two days in trenches, instruction in musketry, grenades & gas attack..." Silked, very good. The second map, 20" x 22 1/2" shows the region about Villeret. A red indelible pencil marks American fortifications south of the town, and an ammo dump and water replenishing station east of the town have also been penciled-in. At right appears a red line demarcating the front, with red "X"s indicating "Bosche outposts". Very good. Two pieces.
