BATTLE ORDERS PROTECTING LOWER WESTCHESTER FROM BRITISH INCURSIONS FROM NEW YORK
JERONIMUS HOOGLAND (1757-1788) Lieutenant and adjutant of Col. John Lasher''s New York Militia Regiment in June 1776 and served with the 2d Continental Dragoons in the same capacity from October 1777 rising to the rank of captain. Captured at Long Island and held prisoner for several months for two seperate terms until 1780. A.D.S. 1p. 8" x 13", Bedford, Oct. 16, 1778 penned on behalf of Col. Elisha Sheldon, detailing: "Orders for the Officers who command the Partys of Horse on King Street Road," with specific instructions and directions for the mounted dragoons then just north of British occupied Manhattan. Hoogland''s orders clearly mark the boundaries for patrols, in part: "...Particular Occasion May Require you will not move Lower than whare the Road turns off from King Street to Wrights Mill makeing your Quarters at some Convenient Place as near that Road as the Safety of your Party will Admit of frequently moving to Prevent Surprise in the Night you will not Either Pass or keep a Ride the Lower Than the Schooll House near Thos Clapps, and in Case the Enemy should Advance you will Imedietly send Intelegence to Gl. Scott and to the Party of Horse near Wrights Mill. Order the Dragoon who goes to Gl. Scott on to Col. Sheldon in his way and give him the Information...". Very good.
