Description:

1041. BATTLE OF WATERLOO Important newspaper containing the official report of the Battle of Waterloo reported in Niles Weekly Register, August 5, 1815, Baltimore, MD., 16pp, 8vo. Lord Wellington's report dated at Waterloo, June 19, 1815, describing the historic confrontation that marked the end of Napoleon's career comprises five columns and three pages, and reads, in small part: "...the attack succeeded in every point — the enemy was forced from his positions of the heights and fled in the utmost confusion, leaving behind him...150 pieces of cannon...I continued the pursuit till long after dark, and then discontinued it only on account of the fatigue of our troops who had been engaged during 12 hours...I send with this despatch, two eagles, taken by the troops in this action, which major Percy will have the honor of laying at the feet of his royal highness...". The entire issue is filled with breaking news from Europe regarding the changes in France, the manifesto of Louis XVIII and much more. A superb piece for any collector of Napoleonic history. The Weekly Register, first published on November 18, 1811 by Hezekiah Niles, was one of the most interesting and notable of all early newspapers. It carried no advertising, only important national and international news and lasted well into the 1840s. The Niles Register, as it became to be known during the War of 1812, is considered the chief forerunner to today's news magazines. Light foxing, otherwise very good. $200 - 300
