K, 4th NH Infantry, 4pp. 4to., Hilton Head, Nov. 12, 1861, to his wife, in part: ‘…We landid here last Thursday night tha [they] had a hard fight I tell you tha fit from the vessels we did not fight the men stood the voyage very well I lost one man he died with the ship fever he belongs to Manchester I wish you to find out his wife she lives on Bridge st…we found most everything you could think of here the Rebels left all of Barge [?] here for us we may stay here all winter or we may not…but tha can't stand it longer with the loss tha met with here the ground left covered with the dead and wounded round the woods & in the fort our side lost eleven tha lost too hundred & all the property on the Iland The shor we occupy is fifteen miles long & eight wide & vessels can run round it thair is plenty of oranges here groing on Plantation we have got too hundred Negroes slave to quarter we got a lot of Cattle here in camp I have got me a horse to ride a nice white one I wish you could see what I have sence I left home…Please send your letters to Capt.
