BATTLE OF CHAFFIN'S FARM
Fine content soldier's letter from Pvt. De Elton F. Joslin, Co. A, 16th NY Heavy Artillery, 4pp. 8vo., ‘Chapins [sic] Farm', Oct. 5, 1864, to his sister. In part: ‘…I received your kind letter…all is well since we have moved from there to Deap Bottom & now lay within-in about five miles from Ritchmond we have been within a mile & a half of the City of Ritchmond twice the last time we went into thare in a rain storm our Brigade was in the advance to all Our Brigade went out on the Squirmish line but…we formed in line of Battle & advanced as a kind of a Reserve to the squirmish line I am proud of one thing my Regt was the nearest in line of Battle to Ritchmond City that has been sence the the war A good many men has been killed up here there was some killed & Wounded in my Regt. I was over to the 2 Division & saw the 117th Regt the Boys are all well, Jake Miller is one of the Collar [Color] Guard. The Collar Guard is formed if Corporels 6 in number & the man that carries the colers is a Sargeant & thay men all killed but the Sargeant & Jake. The 117th regt has 120 men you wanted to know if we had got done with that cannall yet. The cannall is most done they say we only staded [?] there 10 days that was all & then we went to Petersburg what regt is Barney Ruby in he must be some where around here…By the time you git this I may be a private again. General Birney has ishued an order that all of the Officers that stragled on the march from Petersburg to this place are to be reduced to the ranks...Privates to have a Drum Head Court Marshel & have one months pay be taken from them so if that order takes affect I will be reduced...well I don't care what I done the best I could I got some sand in my stocking & walking made my feet sore while I am a corporal I cannot git on detailed service as last winter…So far I have not had eney fighting to do but the night before last we went up to Richmond the shot & shell flew thick & fast but I did not get hit I don't know when I will have to fight though…' Written in pencil, with transmittal envelop addressed in another hand. Very good.
