Description:

BATTLE OF CASTINE BRITISH RELICS
Good group of relics of the 74th British Regiment, recovered from the area of Fort George which was the center of the Battle of Castine - a disaster for Paul Revere and colonial forces sent to attack them. Included in the five-piece lot are several buttons marked '74', a musket ball, and a portion of a spoon. Very good. On June 17, 1779, about 700 British troops sailed up Penobscot Bay and landed in a small settlement called Majabigwaduce, today known as Castine. The British hoped to use the harbor as a base to attack American privateers and shipping and established Fort George there. Then-Lt. Col. Paul Revere commanded an artillery detachment of 100 Massachusetts militiamen sent with a 900 other militiamen on 44 ship to dislodge the British. Jumped by a British naval force, the colonists fled up the Penobscot, losing their entire fleet and an estimated 474 men versus only 25 British soldiers killed during the three-week battle.
