C had scouted ahead about 30 miles and had returned within five miles of camp…the next morning at daylight the company…were surrounded and attacked by 350 Secesh. After fighting upwards of 2 hours the enemy retreated …company of surgeons arrived just as the enemy had got out…our loss is 23 killed and wounded…the enemy is 59 killed & wounded. The Regt has gone on…the Asst. Surgeon and myself are here in charge of the wounded…have several of the wounded Secesh under our charge…we will move onto the Regt in…ten days…Jack C.
