This done as bombs fell, not waiting for C.O…with F/Sgt Barnes & McCann joining up slowly behind. As Green 1 attacked nearest 88 at 7000' giving it a 3 second burst. No hits seen. Range 400 yards. Broke away, I climbed after 2nd 88 who dived for evasive action. 2 bursts of 2 secs each registered no visible effect…Fire from 2 upper rear [?] on 88 observed…Broke away & lost a/c but soon picked it up...being attacked by F/Sgt Barnes from about 150 yds range…observed metal plate [?] of tail fin flapping in the breeze…One stoppage, De Wilde gun. Thinking little ammunition left, left returned to base ignoring at least 3 88's returning westwards…". Trimmed at top, fine condition.
