(BATTLE OF BRITAIN) TRAFFORD LEIGH-MALLORY
(1892 - 1944) RAF Air Chief Marshal, served as a Royal Flying Corps pilot and squadron commander during the First World War. An aggressive combatant, he carried these tactics forward to air sweeps over occupied France and replaced Sholto Douglas as head of Fighter Command in late 1942. In August 1943, Leigh-Mallory was appointed commander-in-chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force for the Normandy invasion. His tough tactics were praised by Montgomery, and he was posted to South East Asia Command but was killed in an air crash while en route to Burma. Rare World War I ‘Combats in the Air' report, 1p. 4to., ‘In the Field', May 7, 1918. A typed combat report for an aerial victory in the Albert locality of a 1 Vickers, Double Lewis fighter piloted by D. H. Phillips with Observer, A. J. Ord. The ‘hostile machine' is described as a ‘Single seater with extensions. No dihedral on top plane', while the report reads that Phillips and Ord: ‘…On return journey from bomb raid 4 E.A. seen about 1000 feet above formation. 1 E.A. dived on formation. Observer fired 200 rounds which were seen to penetrate machine, E.A. going down in a slow spin, and seen to crash in the vicinity of E 5 c. A flash was seen as machine hit ground…'. Leigh-Mallory signs as Major and Commander of No. 8 Squadron. File holes at the top, otherwise fine.
